7 questions interview with Tiquestar
First interview of my new 7 questions interview section. We start off with our good friend Tiquestar. For regular readers of BLDD Tiquestar is no stranger. So I thought it was about time to get to know the guy a bit better. What’s his history, what’s his number etc.
So here you go, read his answers and watch some of his work.
———————— BEGIN ————————-
B|L|D|D ::: What’s your background story, could you give us an introduction?
Tiquestar :::Born 1974 in Amsterdam, started graf in 1982/83 age 9, bombing my hood with
a tiny-ass eddingmarker…
Many years later I ended up in grafic school, getting adopted by my boys
from Utrecht Chohe and Jerms (the magnificent BBBcrew).
By then I started to write Tik, (which later transformed into Tick,then
Tique, now Tiquestar Illuminat Rex.(Hey, gotta keep on moving..)) and bombed
the west- and southside of the city.
I used to go over to the eastside of the city to hook up with Daze, Diz, Bar
and RasD from the CBS crew smoking and listening to the Ultramagnetic M.C’s,
Skinnyboys, Silver Bullet and many obscure (english) hiphop…
In the mean while I was a trainee at the TBHeadquarters (illustrators Angel
and Ice) and getting initiated by the TBH-crew.
By this time I did piece almost every weekend.

I founded the KGB Kinkercrew in ‘96 with Shade,Hole and Tepel, hooligancrew
from the Kinkerbuurt, Amsterdam West.
We used to rob toys and kick the shit outta them…nothing to be proud of,
now…, but it happened…
In the last year of graphic school, I was a trainee at Caulfield & Tensing, a
designstudio from a friend of mine, Niels Meulman Shoe (CTK-USA). There I
worked on the ‘What’s Up’- an online news-freakshow we updated every week…
After freelancing for a year as a dtp-designer, I decided to develope my
drawingskills and applied for a study at the School of the Arts (Hogeschool
voor De Kunsten Utrecht, Faculteit Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving, afdeling
Illustratie)bla bla bla…
Founded the infamous TCM-crew with my homies SKEM and SHES(a.k.a. BFree one,
http://www.bfreeone.com/).
We almost destoyed the whole inside (and outside!) of the faculty by
stickering and bombing it every single day we were present…In my last year
I was asked by my current agency Artbox, to join them. By then I had
developed the authentic ‘Tiquestar-style Gonzo illustrations’. Now I work
almost five years as a freelance illustrator for clients such as Carhartt,
Levi’s, Nike, Adidas, Snickers, Playboy and Heineken.
B|L|D|D ::: Favorite color?
Tiquestar :::Tangerine. [bldd: see also]
B|L|D|D ::: Favorite number?
Tiquestar :::The magic one…3.
B|L|D|D ::: Now a biggie “What is art”/”What is fashion” to/for you?
Tiquestar :::mmm…art can be anything, just as long it is appealing to me.
It has to be fresh, authentic and original..or at least , conceptual
solid….
A sample?
Lets say the Grace Jones album ‘Nightclubbing’, by Sly & Robbie, thats art.

B|L|D|D ::: What’s your top 3 websites?
Tiquestar :::http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_discography
http://www.googleearthhacks.com/
http://www.melvillandmoon.org/
B|L|D|D ::: What are your latest projects?
Tiquestar :::just re-newed my own site…( www.tiquestar.com), and right now I’m working
on an illustration for an article about modern oracles…yeah, don’t ask…
B|L|D|D ::: Anything you would like to add/say to the BLDD readers?
Tiquestar :::keep on rocking in the free world.
