Tommyz Toko Store Make over by ZEDZ

So my hairdresser got a new spot in Amsterdam. Last week I received his press release, no need to translate as all is in english. Will make some photos and post them on BLDD.

On Friday, December 1st, Tommy’z Toko will open the doors of its new hair studio at Admiraal de Ruyterweg 85 in Amsterdam.

Tommy'z tokoTommy’z Toko is more than just a hairdressing salon; it is a place where different creative forms come together. The hair studio’s interior will be given a complete makeover every six months by a different artist – well-known or emerging. The makeovers are being kicked-off by ZEDZ, an internationally renowned graphic designer and graffiti artist. ZEDZ is the first artist to take the salon in hand. The ‘extreme store makeovers’ start from the premise that it is not the furniture that determines the atmosphere of the shop. Designs running across the walls, the floors, the ceilings, even the refrigerators set the hair studio vibe. Even the shop front will get a new look. You will get the chance to see and buy more of ZEDZ’s work in a solo show at the opening on 1 December.

After six months, ZEDZ will pass the shop, or Toko, to another artist, though Tommy Hagen – the Tommy behind Tommy’z Toko – is keeping his/her identity under his hat for the time being. ‘I want to surprise and inspire people with first-rate, exciting artists. The next artist might be a photographer, an illustrator or a fashion designer. My shop will become their canvas,’ Tommy explains. ‘The aim is to wrong foot people when they enter my salon; you can’t see straight away that it’s a hairdresser’s. I want them to discover new things every time they come.’

Tommy’z Toko is situated on the corner of the busy crossroads between Admiraal de Ruijterweg and Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam West. With its large windows it looks like an art gallery. The salon will also exhibit smaller artworks by the participating artists. Artists from Kersvers will also show at Tommy’z Toko. Kersvers is an exhibition organized by Tommy’z Toko every three months. The shop’s interior has been designed by the young up-and-coming designer, Stan Flohr.

Tommy Hagen

Tommy started out as a hairdresser at a young age and has now been working as a hairstylist for eight years. He styles hair for fashion shoots and many national and international magazines, including Elle, Blvd. and Dazed & Confused and such labels as Sony, Levi’s and G-sus. He started Tommy’z Toko in 2003 on Amsterdam’s Prinsengracht. After working out of temporary location for a while, the new Tommy’z Toko opens on 1 December at Admiraal de Ruijterweg 85 in Amsterdam.

ZEDZ

ZEDZ started out as a graffiti artist in the streets of Leiden. ZEDZ’s street art soon attracted admiration throughout the Netherlands. ZEDZ decided to go to art school and studied design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. His work was not overlooked. From 1998 he has exhibited in many exhibitions on graffiti, 3-D imaging and underground art. He has designed logos and graphics for the likes of Sony Ericson, Ecko NY, Rhythm Import and Durex, and is active in the Japanse market. Together with his friend Delta and MUA (Maurer United Architects), who combined graffiti with architecture, he won the Millenium Prize from the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. ZEDZ currently lives and works in Amsterdam.
